Fernanda is ashamed of her actions and pretends that the child was found and gives him the name Aureliano the second.
José Arcadio Segundo is organizing the plantation workers to strike against the inhumane conditions that they work in. The government invites many of the workers for a meeting to settle their issues. The workers were double crossed, and the army surrounds them with guns and kills them all. The bodies are loaded aboard a train and thrown into the sea. José Arcadio Segundo, taken for dead, is thrown onto the train as well, but he manages to jump off the train and walk back to Macondo. There, he is horrified to discover that all memory of the massacre has been wiped out—none of the people of Macondo remember what happened, and they refuse to believe José Arcadio Segundo when he tells them. A heavy, unrelenting rain falls on the town and does not stop, destroying any physical traces of the massacre.
The dictators and their goonies continue to kill any surviving union workers and deny everything. José Arcadio Segundo is found in the Buendía household, hiding in Melquíades’ room. They do not see José Arcadio Segundo. José Arcadio Segundo becomes scared of the rest of the world, and takes siege to room. He begins to study the gypsy’s manuscripts. The more he learns the more his sanity he loses. He begins to live only for his studies and the memory of the fallen 3,000 who died in the slaughter.

Magical Element
The rain the falls on the town that doesn’t stop is an example of magical elements in this section. The rain is acid like and destroys a lot of things.

Reflective Journal Post #2
Right now 10 chapters done 10 to go. This book is not as bad as it could be. Its not Pride and Prejudice but its not a Street Car Named Desire either. I think I would enjoy it more if I didn't have to do the unusually stupid project to go with it. As for the book itself it seems to repeat itself a little too much. Maybe that plays into the title of the book who knows. We got incest, inquisitiveness, and discovery happening all over again. Will it ever end. PLEASE IF YOU HAVE ANY PITY LEFT YOU WILL TAKE THIS BURDEN OFF OUR TIRED SHOULDERS!!! Untill next week...

Reflective Journal Post #1
The book started off slow. It threw me when i realized its a flash back and that we are 6 or 7 chapters (depends on who you are lol) and the story is just catching up with what happens in the first chapter. It wasn't as bad once I got into the story line and could readily identify the different characters and their development. On the other side I think the project are stupid. I don't see what I am getting out of doing this ,but to graduate on time I will do just about anything.
Moving on swiftly what is that idea of plagarism I was warned about. I did not copy and paste anything from anywebsite. I'm still not sure where the line is in my other blog , but I will find it and look to if I did or not. She could be right and I did it accidentally and if that is the case then I will change it.
Hopefully the books gets better and helps take the pain away that project has given. I can't sleep or eat right and it's beginning to ruin my last couple months as a Pioneer.
Until next time...

Chapter 5
Summary
After Remedios finally becomes a woman, she gets married. Rebeca’s wedding was suppose to happen at the same time ,but the husband to be was called off by an ”urgent letter” saying that his mother was on her death bed. The letter turns out to be a lie and Amaranta is accused of it so that the marriage would be delayed. Remedios provides to more of a saint than anyone else in the house by deciding to raise Aureliano’s son as her own. He is named Aureliano José. Not too long after they are married, Remedios dies of a suddenly. This pushes the wedding of Rebeca and Pietro Crespi back even further because they can’t be married while the household is mourning. The building of the city’s first church hinders their wedding as well. The priest who is building the church believes that José Arcadio Buendía’s so called madness is not as severe as everyone thinks. What he is saying isn’t nonsense, but fluent Latin.
José Arcadio brings the ends to the delay and the sadness of death. He is even bigger and stronger than he was and is now covered with tattoos. Even though she’s engaged to Pietro Crespi, Rebeca is intrigue by José Arcadio’s undeniable masculinity, and they begin having an affair which ends in marriage. This also leads to them being kicked out of the house. Romance soon grows between Amaranta and Pietro.
Aureliano is now concerned, not with death of his young wife, but that of the impeding war between the Conservatives and the liberals. Aureliano allies himself with the Liberals because he is upset at what the Conservatives are trying to do. When war breaks and the town are occupied by the Conservative army, Aureliano leads the rebellion, and eventually conquers the town for the Liberals. He becomes known as Colonel Aureliano Buendía. Eventually, he becomes the leader of the Liberal armies.
Characters
Aureliano – Thinks about the greater good and worries about the pending war. He soon aligns himself with the liberals and becomes a Colonel.
Jose Arcadio – He is a still a beast and is the cause of Rebeca not marrying Pietro
Amaranta – She shows that she is true to her word and tries to sabotage the marriage
Quotes
“Now we shall witness an undeniable power of God” – Father Nicanor p.82
“Not madness. War. And don’t call me Aurelito anymore. Now I’m Colonel Aureliano Buendia” – Colonel Aureliano Buendia p.101
Theme
Realization of Truths
The Realization of Truths plays an important role in this section. It’s shown by all of the characters now. We come to know of Rebeca’s infidel ways and that J.A.B. isn’t crazy, but is speaking fluent Latin now. Aureliano realizes what he wants to stand and fight for in life. All hold these to be self-evident and are received differently by their families and friends.
Life is shown by Aureliano surviving the death attempts.
Magical Elements
The unnatural beastliness of characters exhibits is something that isn’t quite real. It begins with Jose Arcadio returning. He is described as something not human almost as a demi-god. With his swagger alone he steals Rebeca away.
Chapter 6
Summary
Colonel Aureliano Buendía leaves Macondo and joins the national civil war effort. He becomes the father of seventeen children around the country as he fights the good fight. He leaves his nephew, Arcadio, in charge of the town in his absence. Arcadio soon becomes a cruel dictator. He tries to sleep with his own mother, she sends him a young virgin named Santa Sofía de la Piedad. They marry and have three children: Remedios the Beauty, Aureliano Segundo, and José Arcadio Segundo.
The Conservatives retake the town after they win the war and Arcadio is executed by a firing squad. Pietro Crespi proposes marriage to Amaranta, but he is denied, and he kills himself. She burns her hand and covers it with the black bandage that she will wear until her death.
Characters
Aureliano – Shows a more intuitive side by standing up for what he believes in and going to fight for it.
Arcadio – He is a tyrant of man he shows his father’s qualities internally
Amaranta – She shows wickedness and doubt by treating Pietro like that, but tries to repent by burning her hand.
Quotes
“We leave Macondo in your care” – Aureliano p.104
“You Murderer!” – Ursula p.105
Theme
Life/Death
In the beginning of the chapter it speaks of all Aureliano’s bastard children and how they were all killed before they met a certain age. Also, the attempts on Aureliano’s life are stated. This leads to the murderous atrocities of Arcadio.
Life is shown by Aureliano surviving the death attempts.
Doing what you believe
It sounds odd but a lot is based on what ideas certain characters have about themselves and what should be done. Earlier in the book the Colonel is presented as somewhat of a geek. He works hard and studies in his lab, but now he is a warrior standing up and fighting for what he believes is right.
This also goes for Arcadio. Even though he is a cruel dictator he goes after what he believes is right even though in our eyes and the citizens of Macondo eyes he is wrong.
Magical Elements
Amaranta going to such extremes to “repent” for poor decision making seems also a little off. This seems to be an indirect reference to a Scarlet Letter of sorts.

Chapter 3
Summary
Upon Ursula discovering the passage way to civilization Macondo begins to change and grow. Pilar gives birth to Arcadio. The son of Jose Arcadio. Rebecca also joins the family; she is an orphan with a mysterious past. After they find Rebecca eating dirt that also discovers that she has insomnia. Soon everyone in the town has it and begins to lose their memory as well. To stop this they start to label everything in the village. First they put up a giant sign to remind themselves that “god exists”. The insomnia is cured when Melquíades returns and has the antidote. Melquíades, who everyone thought was dead, brings back inventions that Macondo has never seen before. This includes the daguerreotype. José Arcadio Buendía sets one of God so he can prove God’s existence. Aureliano who has perfected his craft of silver work, remains solitary and aloof, apparently uninterested in women.
On a failed attempt by Don Apolinar Moscote to pick the color of the Buendia’s new house, He is forced to leave by J.A.B., but soon comes back with soldiers and is made to give over much of his authority. Even though problems occur with the two families, Aureliano falls for the magistrate’s daughter, Remedios.
Characters
Rebeca – A young orphan girl, which little is known except she likes eating the earth.
J.A.B. – Shows that he is a man of somewhat integrity when he stands up against the magistrate.
Aureliano – He exhibits a lot intuitiveness when decides to label the things in the town.
Quotes
“I’ll throw in another 20 cents” – Aureliano p.52
“They won’t be houses of glass but of ice, as I dreamed, and there will always be a Buendia” – Jose Arcadio Buendia p.53
Theme
Natural Oddity
The theme in this chapter is a natural oddity of sorts. The majority of the things that occur are in the manner that they happen. Take Ursula finding the path to civilization, this is odd because her husband went on an expedition, but couldn’t find it while she found it on a two-day journey back home. Another thing is the insomnia which is a natural oddity and it infects not only the family but the whole town.
Magical Elements
One unnatural element is the order that J.A.B has clocks and flutes are in. This is odd because this shows that village borders time and modern discovery. The village has modern elements like this, but don’t seem to have other modern amenities.
The insomnia itself is magic like. Something that happens to millions of people on a daily basis which usually isn’t that serious dominates the town. The insomnia leads to amnesia which is an oddity because it is cured by a potion.

“The man’s a fairy” – J.A.B p.60
“I’ve come to sleep with you” – Aureliano p.67
Theme
Love Lost/Loved Gained
Throughout this chapter love is being pursued by almost everyone. At one point it seems to be lost especially with Aureliano. Along with him, Rebeca and Amaranta, also face this issue. Towards the end of the chapter loved is gained by all except by Amaranta.
Magical Elements
When J.A.B. takes apart the Pianola this shows lack of faith. He does this because he can’t make the daguerreotype to prove God’s existence and stops because he is now convinced of his nonexistence. With everything that has happened to him and his family it seems he would more faith than this. This plays into the mystical element of the Pianola, when he takes it apart strings would mix up and roll in opposite directions, but somehow he manages to put it back together. Maybe it’s under his own ability maybe because of divine intervention…

José Arcadia Buendía, the founder of the town, is intrigued with these magical ideas. Using supplies given to him by Melquíades, the leader of the gypsies, he begins to study science deeply. He finally pays attention to his kids now: José Arcadio, who has inherited his father’s great strength, and, who seems, even as a child, enigmatic and withdrawn.
